Star Trek: 12 Biggest Ever Retcons

1. Kirk's Middle Name

Star Trek Original Series
CBS

Everyone knows the iconic name of James T. Kirk, captain of the Enterprise on Star Trek. He was not the first captain on the show--that was Christopher Pike in the show's original pilot episode The Cage--but he was certainly the most memorable. Yet his name was almost very different from the one we know today.

When Kirk faces off against Gary Mitchell in Where No Man Has Gone Before, Mitchell creates a headstone to mark Kirk's grave. The name on the headstone shows James R. Kirk, not James T. Kirk. In subsequent episodes, Kirk's middle initial was changed to T for Tiberius, and his middle name has remained Tiberius ever since.
