4. Hugh
We next discover the Borg in Season 5, in the episode "I, Borg". The discovery of a wounded Borg and the decision to use it as a weapon to infect the Collective are the basis for this episode. In this case, resistance is not the issue acceptance is. Hugh the name given to the Borg reveals a hidden humanity that Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise were not aware of. The newly individualized Borg utters the phrase "resistance is not futile", in defense of his new friend, Geordie. This episode alone demonstrates that the Borg can be defeated but not by infective virus programs, weapons, or advanced technology, but simply by the reinforcement of individual freedom and self-determination. It is a startling revelation one that illustrates the conceit of the Starfleet officers, to be sure, but it is still a victory that a David would score over a Goliath. Imagine: the bane of the civilized galaxy put down by the surprising slingshot of "feel-good" individuality. Forget the paradoxical shape the Enterprise was initially going to introduce into the Collective that would have caused complete catastrophic system shit-down. Instead, the Borg are simply going to experience Hugh's enjoyment of freedom from the Collective ... and like it. It's more than not futile it's simply unexpected for the supercilious and arrogant Starfleet officers to realize, but it is this unexpected quality that appears and enables the Enterprise to win the day.
