Star Trek Discovery: 10 Awesome Villains They Should've Used Instead

7. General Chang

In keeping with Discovery’s mission of intent to delve into the Klingons as they burst from a century of solitude, the re-introduction of an established character would really help to drive home the changing of an era.

General Chang was first seen as a battle-hardened, Shakespeare-quoting warrior in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. His treacherous efforts to frame Captain Kirk involved firing on a Klingon battle cruiser while under cloak, and having a crew of conspirators assassinate his own Chancellor. A particularly sneaky tactic for a Klingon.

With the continuing of war and the death of Kirk on his mind, we’re hardly given much reason to sympathise with Chang. Discovery is set about 40 years before The Undiscovered Country which, coupled with the dawn of a new Klingon unification and the ignition of open warfare with the Federation, would present a terrific opportunity to explore the origins of TOS-era Klingons such as Chang.

What caused Chang’s thirst for warfare and aversion to peace? Was there a single event that constructed his hatred and scorn? And just how did he lose his eye? Discovery could put the answers to these questions firmly into canon.
