To be honest, Mallory was running so fast and out of control with no regard for his surroundings that he could have just tripped on a regular rock and died from the fall. But he didn’t trip on a regular rock. He tripped on an exploding one.

Earlier in the episode, Spock finds one of these natural landmines and gives it a casual toss. It explodes. So one would assume that after seeing that, every member of the landing party is going to be tip-toeing everywhere they go.

But like a toddler running into oncoming traffic to catch an ice cream truck, Lt. Mallory barrels around with no regard for his surroundings and stomps on the volatile rubble, paying the ultimate, explosive price.
