Before all the action kicks off, Dahj mentions to her boyfriend that she got accepted for a place at the Daystrom Institute, a Federation research facility which has been a not insignificant fixture in Trek lore for over 50 years.

The Daystrom Institute has been featured in numerous novelisations and tangential stories over the years, but its origins date back to The Original Series' 1968 episode "The Ultimate Computer," which introduced the scientist after whom the facility was eventually named, Dr. Richard Daystrom (William Marshall).

The Daystrom Institute first appeared in earnest in The Next Generation, and in Picard's season premiere, we see Picard and Dahj visiting the Institute in Okinawa as they go about their investigations.
