At the end of episode Droids in Distress, Senator Bail Organa is shown inserting a data card into everyone’s favourite astromech R2D2.

It turns out that he was the one who sent R2D2 and C-3PO to the Rebels, in order to gather intel about them, and once they’re returned to him he’s seen reviewing the footage Artoo has obtained.

This is similar to how his daughter, Leia, uses the droid, as she attempts to get a message to Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope. The biggest similarity though is the image when inserting the card into R2, as the two shots are extremely similar, with the one in Rebels being a clear throwback to the original movie.

Phil LaMarr, who voices the Senator, is one of a number of the Clone Wars cast to reprise their role for Rebels. Others include Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker as C-3PO and R2D2, Steven Stanton as Wilhuff Tarkin, and Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano.
