10. AP-5's Musical Moments

Double Agent Droid was one of those episodes that the word “filler” is often used to describe. Droid-episodes tend to be a little kooky, and a break from the looming threat of the Empire in order to enjoy some lighter moments and this time features two of the most unexpected, and oddly great moments of the season – musical moments.

And from AP-5 no less.

En route with Wedge to an Imperial installation in order to retrieve clearance codes for the Lothal sector, during an argument with Chopper, AP-5 drops the line “anything you can do, I can do better.” At first, this just seemed like a coincidence, but then after Chopper grunts his inaudible reply, AP-5 responds with “yes, I can”, and again, and again, matching the musical melody. It’s something you wouldn’t expect to see in Star Wars, in any format, and a moment that was genuinely funny to watch.

Later in the episode, after saving the day and preventing a reprogramed Chopper from dooming the Ghost crew, AP-5 is swept into space and is left drifting through the silent vacuum, destined to do so for all eternity – or at least until his power runs out. Content with being alone with no one to break his rules or order, AP-5 once again breaks out into song, surrounded by a flock of small neebrays and finding peace with his fate.

If the song wasn’t enough, AP-5’s musical moment is interrupted by the Ghost unceremoniously scooping him up, to which he is not very grateful for.
