Throughout Season Three, everything that Phoenix Squadron was doing was geared towards their assault on the TIE Defender refinery on Lothal, striking a critical blow to the Empire’s weapon’s factory posted there. And while that was put on hold thanks to Thrawn’s surprise attack on Atollon, Filoni has reassured that Lothal is very much part of the agenda, just as Mandalore is.

It would unfortunate if Rebels ended without finally delivering on the objective that the Rebels have worked so hard towards, even if within the Star Wars universe, the attack on the Death Star was considering “the first victory against the Empire”, as written in the opening crawl of A New Hope. Blowing up one factory can hardly be considering a victory though can it? They took down Tarkin’s personal Star Destroyer in Season One’s finale, Fire Across the Galaxy. Now that’s a victory built for stories.

The point is that the battle for Lothal is coming. Kanan says to Ezra, “we were meant to be Jedi so that we could be here now, when Lothal needs us most.” Chances are this is said on Lothal, at the beginning of their operation. We also see some fleeting images across the trailer of different events all with the familiar background of the planet that the Ghost crew called home.

It’s looking like these stories will be told across multiple episodes, rather than being self-contained adventures – something we’ve wanted them to do for a while.
