Stargirl Season 1 Premiere Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs

4. It's Nothing Like Other Shows In Its Genre

Stargirl wastes little time setting itself apart from the rest of the superhero pack for the simple reason that there isn't anything else like it in its genre. Oh sure, some may have been quick to judge that its affiliation with The CW suggested it would follow in the footsteps of The Flash, Supergirl or Batwoman, but the truth is that it doesn't. Yes, there are similarities, but it's very much its own beast.

What works for Stargirl is that there aren't any cities full of crime waiting to be saved, there aren't any alien planets just waiting to invade and there aren't any villains of the week chomping at the bit to attack. Instead, there's just a small town full of refreshingly pleasant people and a rich '50s aesthetic that complements its Golden Age references.

There's a nostalgia about the show that owes more to Smallville than it does to its Arrowverse counterparts, and while a crossover with at least one of the latter shows feels inevitable at this point, the show has managed to find its own identity pretty quickly. Let's just hope that it manages to maintain it.
