The Upside Down is absolutely crucial to the events of the show, and despite that we don't know an awful lot about the place. We are going to find out more about it in Season 2, however, and likely over the duration of the series' run, with the Duffer bros. revealing they've got a 30-page document dedicated to the lore and mythology of the place. But what exactly is it?

One idea is that it's actually the very same world of the show. Instead of it being an alternate reality, the theory goes that the Upside Down is the exact same reality as the world Stranger Things takes place in, only from the future.

The theory essentially states that the Cold War escalated to the point that, like in other theories, the world was destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. Only this time, it was the exact same world, not an alternate one.

Then, in that slightly unexplained way a lot of fan theories tend to have, the experiments being conducted in the laboratory ripped a hole in the space-time continuum, allowing the future to bleed into the past.
