We've already got a Batman series without the guy in the suit, and now his BFF Superman is getting in on the prequel act as well, with a pilot for TV series Krypon officially ordered by Syfy.

This is a show that's been in development for a couple of years now, having been created by David Goyer, who worked on the story for Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and more recently wrote Batman v Superman:Dawn of Justice. Now, as reported by Variety, it's finally escaped development hell and is headed for our screens.

The story will take place before Kal-El's time, and instead focus on his grandfather. Set two generationsbefore the destruction of Krypton sends Superman to Earth, it sees the Grandfather of Steel trying to restore his family name after the reputation of the House of El has been tarnished.

That means it's highly unlikely we're actually going to see Superman on the show, even as a baby, but it is a chance to explore more of his home planet in a depth rarely seen on-screen (if it gets a series order, anyway).

Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders, Doctor Who) will direct the pilot episode, while Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow)will serve as showrunner.
