Supernatural: 10 Perfect Episodes

9. Scarecrow

Supernatural Swan Song
The CW

While we all love the bonkers storylines in Supernatural, with the Winchester brothers fighting God himself and stopping the literal sun from exploding, it's the more straightforward monster-of-the-week cases that capture our attention. Scarecrow tells a simple ghost story about a Pagan God that manifests in the form of a scarecrow, demanding couples as a fertility sacrifice. The Pagan God ensures the town succeeds in financial gain as other neighbouring towns struggle around them if he is given his sacrifice every year in the first week of April.

After John Winchester finally contacts his sons, he orders them to stop searching for him and investigate a small town in Indiana. A fight breaks out between the brothers, as Dean is willing to follow his father's orders, and Sam questions Dean's faith in their dad. Due to their argument, Sam decides to split from Dean to look for their father, leaving Dean to solve the case by himself.

Scarecrow is easily one of the more frightening episodes in the series, highlighting just how good Supernatural was in its early days. The terrifying slow-burner made for a nail-biting watch as a creepy atmosphere surrounds the town, with overly friendly townsfolk trying to "help" stranded couples on their road trips. Scarecrow ends on a vital cliffhanger showing demons have been following the Winchesters, as it's revealed Sam’s friend Meg Masters is a demon.
