The Big Bang Theory: 8 Moments That Were Completely Unscripted

4. Penny Looks At The Audience (A Lot)

One thing you'll eventually notice if you're paying sufficient attention to the show is that Penny loves to "spike the lens" - that is, stare directly in the camera lens.

She does it frequently throughout the series, even though the first rule of sitcom acting is, of course, to never acknowledge the camera.

And it goes without saying that this isn't a direction that's written in the script, with Kaley Cuoco doing it of her own volition, either as an habitual mistake or a bizarre attempt to connect with the audience.

Clearly the directors and showrunners weren't too concerned by it, especially as she tends to make fleeting eye contact with the viewer at fittingly heightened moments, but it's still extremely odd thing for any sitcom character not in an explicitly fourth wall-breaking show to do.

Once you start seeing that Cuoco does this, you'll never be able to un-see it, because it's clearly not part of the plan.
