The Flash Season 5: 3 Ups & 4 Downs From ‘Goldfaced’
1. We've Been Here Before, Haven't We?
In case you missed the last point, the sole reason for this episode's existence was Team Flash's desire to find a weapon that could incapacitate Cicada, ultimately allowing them to defeat him. If that doesn't sound familiar to you, it really should because they have literally been spending the whole season trying to do just that.
In fact, it was the plot of the show's 100th episode, as Barry ventured back through various times of his life in order to obtain items to create a weapon that could negate Cicada's dagger. When that didn't work, they discovered that Killer Frost, immune to the effects of the dagger, was actually their real secret weapon. That theory was then put to the test (successfully!) in 'Seeing Red' when Frost battled Cicada and almost defeated him.
This begs the question: why, after devoting two episodes to potential Cicada-slaying weapons, did the writers feel the need to give us a third, especially when one of said weapons has already proven herself to be more than effective? Of course, this all has to do with the fact that Barry now suddenly wants to give Cicada the cure for no reason other than the fact that the plot requires him to. Thus, they needed Goldface's weapon to stun him long enough to make that happen. Well, you know what else is great for stunning people for a long time? Ice.
We've already established that Killer Frost can overpower Cicada and his dagger, so why on earth would they need anything else? This is just another factor that highlights how redundant this episode really was.
