The Flash Season 5: 4 Ups & 3 Downs From 'The Flash And The Furious'

3. A Starring Role For Cecile

The Flash S5 Cecile Horton
The CW

One character who has thrived in Joe’s absence is his other half, Cecile Horton. A recurring presence on the show since the beginning, Cecile had a more significant role last season due to her pregnancy (and the subsequent meta powers she developed as a result), which led to actress Danielle Nicolet’s promotion to a series regular this season. Now, without Joe on the show, Cecile has really stepped up and become a mother figure to Team Flash.

However, while she did a great job providing us with comic relief throughout the first half of the season, this week’s midseason premiere finally allowed us to see her do what she does best. Returning to her position as District Attorney, Cecile served as the prosecution in the Weather Witch’s trial and, for a good few moments, she was on fire. However, when her meta powers took over and she sensed Joss’ remorse, she put her foot down and sought to relax the sentence.

Not only did giving Cecile a more dramatic arc give the brilliant Danielle Nicolet something a little different to work with, it showed us all that the character is so much more than just a hilarious caricature. She’s a strong informed woman who knows how to make the tough decisions, even if it costs her her own case - and that was never more obvious than it was here.

Welcome back, D.A. Cecile Horton.
