The Flash Season 5: 4 Ups & 3 Downs From 'The Flash And The Furious'
1. Uncharted Territory
Much like the villain-of-the-week subplot, the episode's other secondary arc proved to be one of its more engaging aspects. Cisco's sudden realisation that he no longer wanted to be a metahuman may have been problematic (we'll get to that later), but it did present the show with an opportunity to venture into uncharted territory.
Upon having the shards of meta-tech removed from his injured hands, Cisco discovered they were actually the cause of his recent inability to vibe, due to the fact that they were inhibiting his powers. The brainwave suddenly gave him an idea and he began studying the meta-tech's attributes, testing it in an attempt to engineer a cure for metahumans.
However, he got a little carried away and, as a result, clashed with Caitlin, who felt very different about the meta-matter because she finally had Killer Frost back in her life. It's possible that their direct opposition on the cure vs. choice matter may have been a subtextual reference to the importance of giving people a choice over their own body and, if it was, the writers did a great job of highlighting both sides of the argument.
However, in the end, Caitlin helped provide Cisco with the resources to create a potential cure and, just like that, the show is headed in a surprisingly fresh direction. Having a possible metahuman cure could change the face of the meta-filled Central City and, ultimately pave the way for some interesting debates.
Now for the negatives...
