The Flash Season 5: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From ‘Failure Is An Orphan’

1. Joe And Cecile's Forced Argument

Though the professional alliance between Joe and Cecile proved to be one of the plot's most endearing threads, it wasn't all sweetness and light. The pair encountered some teething issues rather early-on in their attempts to get answers from Dr. Ambres and it led to a rather jarring argument between them.

The problem here is not the fact that they disagreed - we get it, the writers have to drag the story out for the full episode, and they actually handled the subtext really well (Joe was worried that he would become obsolete in his own investigation due to Cecile's powers). It was the execution of the argument itself that proved problematic.

After Cecile's not-so-subtle attempts to convince Joe that the doc wasn't being forthcoming, she questioned his decision to let her go. Yes, he should have listened to her because she has super-powers, but after defending his decision by telling her that it wasn't just about her gut-feeling, she immediately decided that they shouldn't be working together after all. A bit premature Cecile, maybe?

Their sentiments were fine, but the argument escalated far too quickly in an attempt to force the conflict, making it feel contrived and like nothing more than a simple plot point that needed to be to addressed.
