The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 7 Ups And 1 Down From Smart Power
4. Aunt Lydia and June's Heart-To-Heart
As the end of her pregnancy draws near, June spends a rather large portion of this episode panicking about the safety of her baby. After witnessing Commander Waterford hurting his wife last week, she's worried that the Waterford household isn't a safe or nurturing place to bring a child up in. We kind of knew that already.
The handmaid confesses her fears to Aunt Lydia, which sparks a rather endearing conversation between the two about the world before Gilead. This is the first time that we've seen Aunt Lydia break character as it were, as she confessed to June that she was godmother to her sister's baby in the previous life.
Is Lydia also starting to realise the dangers of this world, or was she simply appeasing June by answering her questions? It's too early to tell, but the aunt promised to look out for the baby after June gives birth, so Fred Waterford had better be on his best behaviour from now on.
