7. How Did Hill House Become Haunted In The First Place?

Whilst we get a grief glimpse into the previous owners, William and Poppy Hill, the series never gives us enough information to deduct how Hill House actually became haunted in the first place. There are tons of ghosts in that house and we don’t know where they came from.

In an interview, Flanagan said: “[Poppy] definitely brought insanity into the house in a really palpable way." He went onto explain how they had actually written and planned to shoot a complete backstory of Hill House, but they didn’t have the time or money to do it: “Every other episode would open with about a five-minute history thing narrated by Steven, from his book.”

Flanagan did post a lot of his backstory onto r/nosleep, but if the series gets picked up as an anthology then it’s very likely we could get a more solid answer to how Hill House became haunted. Was it solely Poppy, or was the House also born bad, much like in the books, and fed on and twisted Poppy’s maternal instincts?
