The Haunting Of Hill House Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
1. The Tone Is Perfectly Balanced
As horror fans know all too well, it's incredibly easy for a fundamentally silly movie or TV show to take itself deathly seriously, and the result is an unintentionally comical misfire.
Thankfully The Haunting of Hill House has giddy gallows humour peppered throughout, ensuring the horrifying tenor never feels self-consciously grim or relentlessly dour.
The show already feels a bit like a supernatural version of HBO's brilliant Six Feet Under, and this is also reflected in its tone, melding legitimately poignant character drama and genre thrills with pithy comic relief to terrific effect.
It truly is a rare show that gets to have its cake and eat it, being taken seriously as a high-brow genre homage yet also proving unafraid to crack a joke every now and then.
