The Mandalorian 2.2 Review - 4 Ups And 2 Downs

1. We're Still No Closer To Learning The Mystery Of The Child

When it came time to reintroduce The Mandalorian for the second season, it made sense to start things off with a more self-contained story. Viewers are familiar with the central premise and mission for the Mando this time around, and showcasing the full power at Lucasfilm's (and Disney's) disposal by featuring a massive set-piece against a mythological Star Wars beastie was a great way to kick off the whole shebang.

That said, I doubt there were many who expected the following episode to follow a similar format to the first. It's almost video game like; Mando needs X thing, so must complete X task for Y person. We're still no closer to learning of the other Mandalorians in the galaxy or indeed the origins of The Child's species. Not that anyone should expect to get those answers so soon, mind, but neither episode has engaged with the mystery thus far and it is a little frustrating to see the show meander in this way.

Season 1 had similar issues in its middle-most point, but they served a purpose in showcasing how Din was changing as he geared up to leave his old life behind. Neither himself nor The Child have experienced much growth in either of this season's first two episodes, and while The Mandalorian is certainly still entertaining as a showpiece focusing on one adventure per week, it should aspire to be something a little more compelling.

No doubt things will pick up in Episode 3, but this still seems like an odd way to announce The Mandalorian's big return.
