After a year of waiting, The Mandalorian Season 2 finally dropped on Disney+ this Friday. And boy, did it pack some surprises.

The season opener sees the return of Mando (Pedro Pascal) and The Child (A Big Cutey), as the former attempts to return the latter to their homeworld. His search for The Child's people takes him back to Tatooine, where he is told another Mandalorian is residing.

After taking a speeder bike to Mos Pelgo, Mando encounters Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant), the local sheriff. Vanth, already a character in the expanded universe, is confirmed here to be wearing the armour of one Boba Fett, who fans may recall was last seen getting gobbled up by the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi. While Boba survived this encounter in the old Legends continuity, the new expanded canon had so far refused to give a definitive answer as to the bounty hunter's fate... until now.

Mando demands that Vanth relinquish the armour, which the sheriff agrees to, so long as Mando helps him slay a Krayt Dragon, a large carnivorous beastie that's been terrorising the local town. Mando agrees, and with the help of the local Sand People and the town's villagers, they succeed in taking down the monster for good.

This is where things get a little more interesting though. As Mando speeds away with Boba's armour in tow, the camera draws back to reveal a nomadic observer in the desert. The figure turns to face the camera, revealing himself to be Boba Fett, portrayed here by Attack of the Clones' Temuera Morrison, who of course played Boba's father Jango and the clones of the Grand Army of the Republic in the Star Wars prequels.

The various Hollywood trades had already reported of Morrison's casting in the show months before, but this confirms at least one of the roles he'll be playing here.

Time will tell if Boba will be a recurring character or just a cameo to set up further adventures in the Expanded Universe, but given just how beloved a figure he is in Star Wars fandom, it's hard to imagine that Lucasfilm will let this opportunity go to waste.
