The OA Season 2: What Does The Ending Really Mean?

1. A Tree Talks To The OA

The OA Prairie
Netflix

Whilst exploring the House with Karim in search of Michelle, Prairie falls through the rose window into a giant interconnected web of trees that have been “calling to [Prairie] from inside the Earth for many years."

The tree informs her that “the one who seeks to own you is going to make a powerful discovery” and he’ll use it to “destroy your faith in yourself so that you will need him to survive.” This seems to be referencing Hap uncovering the multi-verse map and leading them into our dimension where she’s Brit and he’s her husband Jason.

In order to escape, the tree tells Prairie to “form a tribe,” which surely means Steve, Karim, BBA and the others. They’re all connected to each other no matter which dimension they find themselves in.

The tree internet is also a real natural phenomenon where plants talk to each other using an internet of fungus. It allows plants to communicate and help each other out by sharing nutrients and information.

Marling and Batmanglij likely used this for inspiration, especially as it’s very similar to what the tree internet said to Prairie when she claimed to be alone: “No one tree survives alone in the forest. When one tree falls ill, we all send food. For if one tree dies, the canopy is broken. Then all suffer the weather and pestilence that flood in. You will not survive on your own.”
