In the very first episode of The Office, we see Pam Beesly becoming upset over a prank that Michael Scott plays on her. Michael tells Pam she's fired, and she swiftly bursts into tears. When he reveals it's all just a joke, Pam calls him a "jerk". By the time Michael departs for a new life in Colorado, though, things are very different between the pair.

Over the course of the show, Pam and Michael end up getting close. For example, when Michael leaves to start his own paper company, Pam gives up her job to go with him. Likewise, Michael is the only one in the office to truly support Pam with her art show; even buying her painting of the office building.

Michael is devastated when it might look like he wouldn't get to say goodbye to Pam when he leaves for the airport. Thankfully, Pam turns up just in time to have a heartfelt farewell with Steve Carell's character.
