8. Attention To Period Detail

The Queen’s Gambit is a period piece - the series begins in the mid-1950s and follows Beth’s journey up until the late 1960s.

Much like the original novel (which was published in 1983), the series is an affectionate but sometimes chilling callback to that era. The end result creates a cynical view of that era, and we are brought into a vivid world of hard drugs, parties and excessive debauchery.

And, everything about the show brilliantly recreates that era - from the beautiful, elegant costumes to the glorious and fun pop music. It’s possibly the best recreation of the 1950s-1960s era since the Amazon Original, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Much like Frank’s other Netflix miniseries, Godless, we, as the audience, are taken into a really detailed and well-realised world that feels fully fleshed out.
