The Queen’s Gambit stands out from the very crowded Netflix Original counterparts in that it feels like a sophisticated, classy piece of entertainment that treats its audience with the utmost intelligence.

From the very beginning, the audience are forced into this vivid and complex world, full of complex characters and complicated emotions, and have to get used to it.

This is only exemplified by how the series treats its central subject of Chess. The series doesn’t feel the need to explain the rules of the game in detail - the games just play out and the audience are forced to follow and keep up.

It feels really refreshing in this day and age to watch a TV show that is smart, intelligent and never feels the need to patronise it’s audience.
