The Simpsons: 10 Best Characters Voiced By Harry Shearer

9. Dr Hibbert

We have Harry Shearer to thank for giving us the man with the most memorable chuckle in all of Springfield. Dr Julius Hibbert and his unforgettable laugh first appeared in the second season and have been a feature of the long-running show ever since.

Whilst this character might initially seem kind and warm, with the pleasant bedside manner you would expect of a medical professional, he has a tendency to laugh at inappropriate moments, usually involving someone's misfortune.

Like so many of Shearer’s characters, Hibbert feels incredibly lived-in, and as the flashback moments in the show reveal, he has been the Simpsons family physician for many decades. In fact, one of the show’s best running gags is that whenever we see Hibbert in a flashback, he always has a different hairstyle, appropriate to the time period.

Whilst it was Harry Shearer who initially voiced Dr Hibbert, this is the only character on this list that is no longer voiced by him. In 2020, in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, it was decided that all of the show's non-white characters would be recast, and from 2021 onwards Dr Hibbert has been voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, another renowned voice actor who had in fact provided additional voices for The Simpsons since 2009.
