The Simpsons: 10 Best Villains Ever
5. Hank Scorpio
Scorpio is one of the greatest characters the show has ever had, fantastically voiced by Albert Brooks, who shines in every guest spot. Brooks’ ad-libbing style complements Dan Castellaneta’s perfectly, giving some great moments not only as Scorpio, but as Tab Spangler and Cowboy Bob too.
The only reason he only reaches the halfway point is on account of how nice he is. Sure, he’s a terrorist supervillain blowing up bridges, killing government agents and threatening the entire nation of France, but he offers to take Homer bowling when he’s feeling glum.
The whole point of his character is to show us the inner life of a supervillain, all while highlighting Homer’s complete lack of awareness for his surroundings. As such, it’s undeniable that he is a villain, even if there’s nothing you can point to that highlights this on a small scale. He’s charming, affable and friendly to everyone he meets... when he’s not trying to seize the East Coast.
Something oft-forgotten in the midst of the yuk-worthy lines we all know and love is how clever a story this is. A never before seen perspective on the ruthlessly diabolical, viewed through Homer’s oblivious lens.
