The Simpsons: 10 Hidden Jokes Everybody Missed

2. A Subtle Dig At Dan Quayle

The Simpsons never shied away from wading into the murky waters of US politics during its heyday, and the show's long-running feud with former American president George Bush is legendary.

Bush was always an opponent of the series and once condemned it in an official address. In response, The Simpsons tore him a new one in the season seven episode Two Bad Neighbors, and his inept deputy Dan Quayle didn't escape the writers' wrath.

The dig at the former vice president is incredibly subtle, blink-and-you-miss-it stuff. In the scene where Bart shreds Bush's memoirs, a scrap of paper with the words "VP Quayle" and "embarrassment" written on it fleetingly appears on screen.

The Simpsons writers clearly weren't Quayle's biggest fans, since they later put him on board a rocket to the sun in a Treehouse of Horror episode.
