The Simpsons: 10 Moments More Important Than You Realised

3. Patty In The Closet

The Simpsons Homer's Odyssey

Sexuality has been a theme on The Simpsons a number of times. Homer's Phobia tackled the discrimination facing gay people head-on, Smithers came out in Season 27, and then there's Marge's sister Patty.

She beat Smithers by a full decade when she came out in the episode There's Something About Marrying. She comes to Homer for help, as he's the only person in town who will perform same-sex weddings. The episode also deals with Marge's troubling response to her sister's revelation, and her eventual acceptance of who she is.

Although, she probably should've figured it out. There were plenty of signs.

In Treehouse of Horror III, Patty says "There goes the last lingering thread of my heterosexuality" upon seeing Homer naked. The biggest canon clue to Patty's sexual preferences came in the episode Jaws Wired Shut, where she and Smithers could be heard participating in a gay pride parade from inside "the closet".

What was just a throwaway gag to begin with hinted not only at Patty's future bombshell, but also Marge's future obliviousness. In Jaws Wired Shut, she says it would be great if the man and woman in the closet "got together".

Oh, Marge.
