The Simpsons' 10 Most Desperate Attempts To Boost Ratings
8. Flogging A Dead Bart - ‘Treehouse Of Horror XXVI’ - S27, E5
Beloved attempted murder Sideshow Bob finally actualises his dream in this episode. After several failed attempts during the heyday of the series, Bob Terwilliger finally kills the boy brat, Bart.
At the beginning of the episode, Bart goes to the music room of Springfield Elementary and comes face to face with a violin playing Sideshow Bob.
Bob swears to kill Bart once and for all, to which Bart mockingly says Bob would never be able to. Then Bob shoots Bart with a harpoon through the chest alluding to Ahab killing the white whale, Moby Dick.
Completing his life’s purpose, Bob rejoices in song, posts a photo of himself with Bart’s corpse on ‘Fiendbook,’ wears Bart as a backpack, drinks Bart’s brain matter with wine, and uses Bart’s mouth as a golf hole. From there, Sideshow Bob gets on with his life and ends up lecturing at Springfield University.
No longer having any purpose, Bob takes out Bart’s corpse whilst saying ‘it seems the only thing that made me happy in my accursed life was killing you.’ Bob then decides to reanimate Bart to slay him with a sledgehammer, a gun, a lion, a steamroller, a high electricity bill, and finally, dissection.
Eventually, Bob is discovered, Homer kills Sideshow Bob with a repeatedly-reanimated lamp, and Bob’s head gets attached to a chicken’s body. You can tell this is a later episode.
Despite this episode creating interest through Bob’s accomplishment, the writers failed to deliver yet again. The repeated killing of Bart was overkill, to say the least, and it seems as if the writers did it just to do it. Again and again.
