The Simpsons: 10 Most Overrated Episodes

7. Cape Feare (Season 5, Episode 2)

At the risk of receiving considerable abuse in the comments (although I feel like when you write an article as subjective as this one, abuse is pretty much inevitable), I am going to have to say that I find Martin Scorsese€™s remake of Cape Fear to be one of his worst movies, and itself a completely overrated effort from one of the finest cinematic minds the world has lucky enough to have been graced with. So inevitably, it€™s hard for me to not view this parody of the episode with Sideshow Bob in place of Robert DeNiro as equally overrated and lazy. The episode is constantly ranked highly in articles about the best episodes. ScreenRant places it in its top 16, the Telegraph puts it in their top 25, and Rolling Stone places the episode at an astonishing 7th place. But what is so good about it that it deserves these kind of plaudits? There is one particularly genius gag where Sideshow Bob steps on nine rakes one after another, proving that Family Guy really did take its best ideas directly from the Simpsons (which there is nothing actually wrong with by the way €“ that€™s how entertainment and art works). Other than that the episode is straightforward parody of a poor remake, of an okay 1960s thriller. It€™s fine, but there are infinitely better episodes than this one, and it barely cracks the top 100 - let alone the top 10.
