The Simpsons: 14 Most Controversial Episodes Of All Time

13. Sunday, Cruddy Sunday

Getting on the Catholic League€™s bad side isn€™t exactly a major feat: they seem to take issue with anything that isn€™t in line with their way of thinking, and over the past few decades they€™ve complained about everything from Joan Osbourne€™s one hit wonder One of Us to George W. Bush€™s use of €˜holiday€™ instead of €˜Christmas€™ on the White House€™s official festive greetings cards. So a scene in Sunday, Cruddy Sunday of a mock Super Bowl advert featuring three scantily clad young ladies, one with a crucifix necklace dangling provocatively in her cleavage, accompanied by a voiceover saying €˜The Catholic Church € we€™ve made a few changes€™ was bound to ruffle a few religious feathers. After a flood of complaints, the Fox Network bowed to pressure and removed all references to Catholicism in the scene, changing the line to simply €˜The church€™ and thereby mocking all western religions rather than just one.
