The Simpsons: 15 BEST Golden Age Episodes

9. And Maggie Makes Three

The Simpsons Bart Gets An F
Fox

The Simpsons has never been short on its sentimental moments. There's been a multitude of heartwarming endeavours, spiritual journeys and ruminal journeys, but debatably, and it is a tough argument to quell, "And Maggie Makes three" might be the most pervasive of these experiences.

The episode strives to tell a simplistic story - akin to the best of the series' offerings - taking a concept that's incredibly grounded and giving it an extra few layers of intrigue, as we learn of the state of affairs in The Simpsons' lives when Marge was pregnant with Maggie, with a predominant focus on Homer. Mostly chronicling the earth-shattering discombobulation felt by the Simpson patriarch as he leaves the Power Plant to undertake his dream job of working at a bowling alley, only for his predicament to revert when finding out that he can't afford another child on his new salary.

What follows is a tale filled with humour and heart, while being severely hedonistic in its catatonic rollercoaster of emotions. The episode will have you laughing, mostly in utter disbelief at Homer's antics, before creating one of the most tear-jerking scenes in any sitcom before and after. If you don't understand the context of the line "Do it for her" in this episode, then do yourself a favour and seek this episode out.

You're welcome, in advance.
