The Simpsons: 15 Most Underrated Golden Age Episodes

3. New Kid on The Block

Mr Lisa Goes To Washington
Fox

The first of the three episodes written by Conan O'Brien with his patented stamp of vivid humour all over it gives us so many memorable moments that it's genuinely mind-blowing how this little this one is referenced in the conversation of classic Simpsons episodes. It's certainly scrupulous in execution, but it lacked the same feeling in feedback, both back then and still now.

When the new neighbours - Ruth and Laura Powers - move in next door to the Simpson family, Bart immediately finds himself doing something disgusting and falling in love with a cootie ridden monster, or as everyone else would refer to them; a girl.

The darkly surreal, but flagrantly humorous clip of Laura physically ripping Bart's heart out still gets laughs upon repeat viewings. The eventual and vastly fulfilling result of Moe's built-up rage regarding Bart's prank calls - taking it out on Jimbo Jones instead - is a perfect fanfare moment, and the seamlessness of its charming story, with the typical, society jabbing jokes that were prevalent in these earlier (better) seasons of The Simpsons are all present and accounted for.

The b-plot with Homer is quite shallow and leaves more to be desired, but it's still reminiscent of everything we know and love about the quirky glutton.

It ends on a really sweet note, as Laura gifts Bart with his second kiss (on the cheek). Unlike most modern shows - including the modern version of this one - which would probably have some painfully unfunny and inappropriate relationship come from it all.

Now if only we could analyse the past to rectify the future...
