The original is, of course, hard to top, which is why it's so far up on the list. Twenty-five years ago, The Simpsons debuted on Fox with their holiday special Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire. It was an animated sitcom unlike any ever seen before, without the wholesome, straightforward approach of say The Flintstones or The Jetsons, and with all the moral ambiguity of real life suburban living. It was a show finding its footing, and introducing the basic cast of characters. Animation was crude (though miles ahead of their Tracey Ullman sketches), voices not yet perfected, but the core concept was there, as was its heart. Which makes it a very, very hard episode to top - especially given in the end, you get Santa's Little Helper as part of the deal.
