With The Simpsons having stretched on and on over the decades, it's had to go to some lengths to continuously generate discussion and keep the show fresh. Developments that would have been unthinkable years ago now transpire because, well, why not? Good ideas essentially ran out back in the 90s.

Indeed, sitting down to watch a new instalment of The Simpsons nowadays, we might be forgiven for assuming that the wacky events and out-of-character behaviour within indicated a surreal Treehouse of Horror special. Nope, it's just an ordinary episode, and all of this is actually happening (well, not really, but you get it).

Yet, even from the show's early days, it was no stranger to bizarre scenes - it's just that they usually took place as part of a simple daydream. As the show has gone on, however, the line between reality and fiction, or rather fiction and even more fictional fiction, has become blurred.

Though none were "real" insomuch as it's all, of course, the workings of an increasingly zany cartoon that's been churning out episodes for more than 30 years - can you tell which of these scenes actually happened in established storyline canon, and which existed only in the minds of Springfield's characters?
