The Simpsons: Every Season 1 Episode Ranked
1. Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire
It might seem a bit obvious to place the first EVER episode at the top spot but really, what else could it have been? This is an absolute classic and so important to the show’s history that it just can’t be forgotten. Before this episode, The Simpsons were only known through their animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. Matt Groening was taking a real leap of faith by giving them their own full-length show. It was imperative for the whole series to make an impact on viewers in order for it to become a successful hit.
And the final result is…brilliant!
Everything fans love about The Simpsons has been jammed pack right here to create both a hilarious and poignant sample of animated drama. The jokes are prominent, the characterization is accurate to how we know the main Simpson family today and the story is focused to really drive a good story. In the festive setting, we see Homer trying to get the perfect Christmas. Naturally, this doesn’t quite to plan as he agonizes through awkward school performances, unwanted relatives, being shown up by his neighbours lights display etc. It’s reminiscent of a similar Christmas we’ve all been through at least once.
The storyline also echos with the audience because of the harder obstacles Homer goes through. He’s financially struggling - having to pick up a second job, stealing wildlife property for his Christmas tree and as a final resort betting on a dog track all to make ends meet. In the end, Homer doesn’t get the money for presents but he gets to keep the losing dog he bet on.
Preparing his family for disappointment, they are satisfied anyway with having Santa’s Little Helper as a new addition to their house. It’s a testament to how close-knit the family are as they don’t let the lack of material possessions bring their Christmas down and are happy to share their love with a dog.
Above all, this built the groundwork of what made The Simpsons such a popular show – despite their odd physical appearances, they are right up there with any other relatable television family. Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire worked well back then and it still does today, barely showing its age. It should be considered amongst some of the producers’ finest work.
