Barney Gumble is supposed to be as pathetic as possible. That was creator Matt Groening’s original intention with the Springfield side character. Barney was supposed to be the biggest idiot and loser imaginable, someone who has lost his entire potential to alcoholic beverages and basically lives for his next refill.
Groening admitted that Barney was partly based on “Crazy” Guggenheim, a memorable character from Jackie Gleason’s American Science Magazine who was a famous drunk who given the old rules of television at the time we could never actually see have a drink... but was clearly off the wagon.
By the late 80s that was no longer a thing on tv and The Simpsons completely went for it by showing Barney Gumble drinking more than he ever says any lines of dialogue.
Barney has appeared in 274 episodes of The Simpsons and was a central character in a handful of episodes including Mr. Plow and Days of Wine and D’oh’ses. But how much can you really recall about Homer Simpson’s best friend and frequent patron of Moe’s Tavern?
