Originally the character of Otto Mann was going to go by the name Otto Mechanic but The Simpsons writers ended up not believing the joke would land for audiences or work the way they hoped.
The character, a heavy metal obsessed slacker who still has a low-paying job as he enters his 30s, was based on a certain stereotype of music fan in the early 90s who would listen to Guns N’Roses, Metallica and other such bands on their walkman, coasting through life with no baggage.
His look was inspired by former Simpsons writer Wallace Wolodarsky though occasionally he does strike a striking resemblance to former Guns N’Roses and Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash, particularly when he wore a top hat to propose to his girlfriend.
