The Sopranos: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

3. Season Six A

It should be noted up top that one particular arc in season six is among the show’s least interesting. Erstwhile side character Vito Spatafore’s homosexuality and subsequent life on the run has the makings of an interesting angle, but the sudden escalation of the character’s status and the slow pace of the story makes this something of a miss.

Aside from that, though, season six(a) is a fascinatingly inventive, often confrontational installment for the show. It starts with “Members Only”, a hall of fame episode that sees Tony get shot. From there, the season sees Tony grapple with his conscience and mortality, and attempting in his own way to become a better man.

A big theme of The Sopranos is whether people are capable of true change, and to that end season six is a dark one, seeing the likes of Christopher and Vito, along with Tony, unable to escape from themselves.

The heavy use of dream sequences and relatively slowburn intensity of this run won’t be for everyone, but it’s a testament to The Sopranos’ evolution that a season like this is just as fitting as the previous season’s gangster goodness.
