Netflix's Academy has superheroes, aliens, time travel and talking chimpanzees under its Umbrella.
It's a great time to be a comic book fanatic, with every studio out there looking to take game-changing stories from the glossy pages to the big screen. And if you happen to be a fan of Dark Horse's The Umbrella Academy, the news that Netflix will be turning it into a live action series will definitely have fans everywhere marking their calendars.
While this ragtag group of heroes isn't as popular as The Avengers of The Justice League, they do have a solid following and any self-respecting fanboy or fangirl will not want to miss this one. However, it should appeal to fans of all comic books, or even just comic book TV shows, regardless of whether you're familiar with the source material or not.
One thing of note to point out is that, from the looks of the first trailer and the rest of the marketing, this Netflix series will be extremely ambitious. This adaptation promises to be a very different take on the superhero genre in a world that is unrivaled with its story and its vision, and this is everything you need to know before it hits Netflix.
11. What Is The Umbrella Academy?
The Umbrella Academy is an Eisner Award-winning Dark Horse comic series created by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way. The series is made up of three volumes called Apocalypse Suite, Dallas, and Hotel Oblivion. There are also 4 accompanying short stories.
The story takes place in an alternate history where John F. Kennedy was never assassinated and is primarily set in 1977. At one point, forty-three infants are born to random women who were not pregnant before the day started. Seven of these miracles are adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who prepares them to save the world, and each of them possesses a unique superpower, ranging from super-strength to time travel.
The live-action series will follow the members of the dysfunctional family of superheroes who will work together to solve their father’s mysterious death, but the estranged family can't help but fall back into the same behavior that caused them to separate in the first place. And then there is the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, The Boy, and Vanya will be played by an all-star cast in the highly anticipated Netflix series, which debuts February 15, 2019 and hails from Fargo producer Steve Blackman.
