In season 6, Bonnie and Damon became friends after being trapped together in the alternate dimension for several months; they forged such a deep bond that for the rest of the show, everyone considered each other to be their best friend.
Many fans hoped that this relationship would grow into something more, especially after Nina Dobrev left the show and her character remained comatose.
