As he watched Daryl get beaten, Carl being sexually assaulted and with Joe laughing and whispering what they'd do to Michonne in his ear, Rick finally snapped, biting out his jugular and distracting the rest of the Marauders long enough for his group to overpower and slaughter them all.

This moment demonstrated again for viewers what Rick had grown capable of to keep his family whole.
