The Walking Dead: 8 Insane Ways The TV Show Should End

3. Carl Takes Over

As The Walking Dead continues to progress, so too does the young Carl Grimes get older and older. However Rick's story ends, Carl ultimately taking over as the focus is shifted to his perspective has a lot of interesting storytelling possibilities (and could even lead to a sequel series of some sort). Of course, with the massive popularity of The Walking Dead, chances are it's only going to end when viewers grow sick of it or the story reaches its natural conclusion, so an ending or even flashforward to Carl setting off on his own path in life would be a fitting and somewhat sad ending sure to stick with viewers. After all, a scene confirming that Rick's actions did ultimately keep his son alive would show that while his mission was ultimately accomplished, it changed very little other than giving his son a future in a world ravaged by death. The walkers would be as deadly as ever, and while his kids might be alive (Judith too), they're still left fighting for survival in a world that wants them dead; it would point to a vicious and never ending circle. The Walking Dead is very much Rick's story, but it's also the story of the family he's fighting to protect. Yes, he's looking out for the likes of Daryl and Maggie, but his children will always come before everyone else, something which has been evident at several points in both the comic book and TV show. While Carl is something of a divisive figure, having the show end with him setting off on his own path in a world made at least a little safer thanks to his father would be a fitting way to pay tribute to Rick's actions while also leaving the future an uncertain and dangerous place.
