Due to the nature of the post-apocalyptic setting in which The Walking Dead takes place, there's no guarantee when it comes to how long characters are going to stick around for. As a result, it's essential that the writers attempt to forge new partnerships and create new bonds.

Why? Well, because setting up new units and factions is a vital competent in the survival - and the future - of the series. Forging new friendship groups - duos or otherwise - will ensure that, if any more characters are to meet their maker, the writers won't be left with a bunch of newbies who've never interacted before. Alden and Luke, for example, are a prime example of this. In a few short scenes in Adaptation, the show has a new unit - one that has the potential to be as important as the likes of Daryl and Rick, or Michonne and Andrea etc. The same can be said for Enid and Magna.

What's more, watching people get to know each other reminds us of our heroes' humanity. It also makes for some humorous scenes and adds a little levity to the dark themes of the series.
