Seven seasons in, and Rick remains the beating heart of the show; the sun around which all characters orbit. This year, however, that heart started to fail, and there was something of an eclipse.

The first eight episodes of the season were concerned with one thing above all others: breaking Rick Grimes. It was too much, really, but Andrew Lincoln always gave it his all, and everything hinged on his reaction.

That really came in the second half of the season, when he decided to fight back. It led to some questionable decisions, including trusting the Scavengers and raiding Oceanside, which made him harder to root for. But when it's Rick vs Negan, he's the clear winner, and he got plenty of good moments too, especially his fight with Winslow, but also him and Michonne slicing through walkers with the cars, and at the fun fair, all while carrying the series as its lead.
