The Walking Dead Season 9 Finale: 4 Ups & 2 Downs From ‘The Storm’

Ups...

4. Winter Is (Finally) Here

The Walking Dead The Storm
AMC

It might have only taken nine years, but winter has finally arrived in the world of The Walking Dead. Considering this apocalypse has been going on for many years, you might question how the series has gone on this long without showing us our protagonists surviving the snowy months of the year, and you'd be justified in doing so.

It's a very good question - one made all the more appropriate when you consider that the wintery weather arrived incredibly early into the apocalypse in the comics. While no reason has been given as to why the writers made us wait this long, it's likely that budget reasons - not to mention the writers' fear to step away from the series' status quo - that's prevented them from allowing winter to arrive.

Nonetheless, winter is here, and boy was it worth the wait. The snow backdrops and bright colour palette allow a change from the show's usual aesthetic, and these elements create something truly beautiful to behold. However, the main attraction in regards to the snow is that it provides another obstacle that our protagonists must fight to overcome.

Plenty of us have also always wondered how the walkers would cope during the snow climate, and we got our answer during this episode. Many of them froze, which made defeating them much easier for our heroes.
