The West Wing Cast: Where Are They Now?
12. Kristin Chenoweth - Annabeth Schott
After C.J’s
promotion to Chief of Staff, the West Wing never actually filled the role of Press Secretary again, with Toby and Will giving press briefings in their
capacities as Communications Director. Kristin Chenoweth’s Annabeth Schott,
introduced in the sixth season as a Deputy Press Secretary, also chipped in,
though she jumped ship to the Santos campaign ahead of the seventh. Perhaps the
most underdeveloped of the main cast (a potential storyline with Leo cut short
by John Spencer’s death), she was nevertheless memorable in her own ways.
Kristin Chenoweth came to the series from a varied background that incorporated gospel singing, opera and musical theatre. The role of Annabeth was her first major television role, though she has subsequently appeared in various capacities in the likes of Pushing Daisies (which won her an Emmy), BoJack Horseman and Glee. The latter of these drew from her extensive experience on the stage and behind a microphone, which has seen her release seven albums, undertake three national and international tours and receive two solo revue shows on Broadway.
Covid-19 has done a serious number on theatre and live music in the last year, though Chenoweth was able to lean on her other talents to bookend 2020 with appearances in films on Netflix (Holidate) and HBO Max (The Witches).
