11. Quagmire (Season 3, Episode 22)
"You know, it's interesting you should say that, because I've always wanted a peg leg. It's a boyhood thing I never grew out of. No, I'm not being flippant. I mean, I've given this a lot of thought." - Mulder, in response to Scully's comment that he's just like Ahab from Moby Dick
In "Quagmire," Mulder drags Scully down to Georgia under official pretenses to go lake monster hunting. Big Blue, a Loch Ness-ian aquatic beast rumored to live in the depths of Heavelman's Lake, may (according to Mulder) or may
not (according to Scully) actually exist and has begun to eat people from the surrounding area. This episode very much follows the formula of the MOTW, and it is a case where it is easy to see the sides of both agents' arguments about Big Blue's existence. Mulder and Scully are pretty cute together in "Quagmire," and Scully's exasperated tolerance of Mulder's giddy unprofessionalism is very sweet. Besides, there's an attack involving hallucinogenic toad-skin-licking and a mystery involving a lake monster. Lake monsters are always fun. Toad-licking, not so much.
